Tucked just 20 miles south of the heart of downtown Nashville is a barbecue treasure – Mickey Roos. This Texas Style BBQ restaurant is the perfect combination of country music, good food and a friendly atmosphere. Mickey has been running this place long enough in Franklin to welcome a regular crowd full of characters and laughter. It is a place where you go in and you will inevitably know someone, see your favorite waitress, and get to chat with Buddy behind the bar. Did I mention the Texas BBQ rocks!?
Most Thursday nights, as long as the Titans aren’t playing, Mickey Roos hosts an open mic night. This night gave way to the Mickey Roos’ Idol Contest. The contest has been running for three years now. It is a chance for people of the community to come out and get their 4 minutes on stage rocking out to their favorite country, pop, or rock song. You will hear everything from the Beatles to Alan Jackson to Aretha Franklin.
At the beginning of the summer they start selecting the contestants for the contest based off of their turn out to the open mic nights. Once they have selected their batch of contestants, the game is on! Every week, the singers come out with a new cover song in hand and take over the stage. The singers are backed by a talented, well seasoned house musicians called the Exit Sixty Nine Band. This three piece band knows every song ever played… well, maybe not every song, but if they don’t know it, they may be able to figure it out… but they probably know it!
Singers are able to bring friends and family to come out and support them by voting for them to stay in the contest. Every week one is eliminated and the whole contest comes down to one winner. Eric Agnew was the winner for 2007 and Mike Pruitt took home the prize in 2008 (he beat me that year). The winner of the Idol contest receives $1000.00. Even more than that, they get the chance to sing, meet musicians, and hone their craft… who wouldn’t want to do that!?
They have asked me to come back this year as a judge. It should be interesting to sit on the other side of the stage. Last year I was singing the songs, learning the words, and wishing I could make it one more week. Now, I get to be the encourager… I am definitely looking forward to it. The five finalists are: Tianna Seidel, Keith Milam, Melinda Curtis, Tom Newcome, & Oliver Hairston.
