Music Row announced in October of 2009 that the new Screen Gems production, Country Strong (originally named Love Don’t Let Me Down), was set to film in Nashville in the winter months of January and February. Major cities like Austin are usually chosen for “countrified” movies – but since Tennessee offers several incentives for production companies to make films here, Music City won the contract and is now benefiting from the business and the revenue produced by a $15 million movie. Although locals are used to the Country/Hollywood couples looking more like Keith and Nicole or Brad and Kimberly, the on-screen coupling of Tim and Gwyneth is sure to be a hit.
Weeks into filming now, Nashville natives are getting an even bigger taste of Hollywood as Academy Award-winning actress Gwyneth Paltrow and local country artist Tim McGraw act their way through this country drama. About three-quarters of the film will be shot here in Nashville; leaving the remainder to be shot where trees still have their leaves (since the setting of the film is “not so much” winter). Being able to produce this movie so close to the family farm keeps Tim available for his kids and his music career. McGraw certainly has enough to keep him busy between this film, tour dates, and an album with hits climbing to the top of the charts. It has to be difficult for him to toggle back and forth between his singing hat and the actor’s script.
However, this isn’t his first “trip to the rodeo.” Tim’s major acting credits include:
Ed: Love Don’t Let Me Down (2010)
Sean Tuohy: The Blind Side (2009)
Dallas: Four Christmases (2008)
Aaron Jackson: The Kingdom (2007)
Rob McLaughlin: Flicka (2006)
Charles Billingsley: Friday Night Lights (2004)
Sheriff Cliff Powers: Black Cloud (2004)
Lionel: “The Jeff Foxworthy Show” (1 episode, 1997)
Love Don’t Let Me Down features Gwyneth and Tim, as well as Garrett Hedlund and Leighton Meester. Writer and director Shana Feste describes the movie as “a rising young singer-songwriter (Hedlund) who becomes involved with a fallen country singer (Paltrow). As they embark on a career resurrection tour with her husband and manager (McGraw) and a beauty queen-turned-singer (Meester), romantic entanglements and old demons threaten to derail them all.”
The movie’s working title of Love Don’t Let Me Down has been changed to Country Strong – see updates about it here.
