One As Beautiful As You

In Hear this, Lyrics, Music, See this, Songwriting on April 9, 2012 at 7:30 am

vangogh_self_portraitGrowing up in high school I ran with the crowd that thought it was cool to listen to retro music.  Artists like James Taylor, Janis Joplin, and Don McLean.  Listening to this music takes me back to a time when I thought about life and all its possibilities.  The poetic lyrics allowed my mind to dive in to search for the story they are telling between the lines.

I remember Mr. Phillips, teacher from my Gifted and Talented class from grade 7 – 12.  He is one of the champions of my life.  He was so inspirational.  Learning and self-discovery “turned him on” and he gave that passion to us.  Whether is was a movie, a book, a poem, a song lyric, he always challenged us to go deeper.  “What else could it mean?”  In a literal world full of rules, regulations, and black & white answers, that class helped my mind break free of the obvious answers in life. In Art, Film/TV, Industry News, Music, Music Business, nashville, See this, Trends, You HAVE to on March 27, 2012 at 6:49 am

Growing up in South Jersey, I didn’t know there was such a thing as a music business – it was just me and Barbara (Streisand that is) in my dining room with vinyl records and headphones. I just thought people sang through the radio and on stage. I never gave any mind to the massive machine behind the curtain. I wasn’t aware that you could track trends, study best practices, and redo what others had done before (only better) and rake in the big $$$. Read the rest of this entry »

NBC’s “The Voice” is a refreshing and welcomed addition to the current reality talent show competition generation. The show kicks off its maiden voyage with tonight’s season opener where four professional “coaches” of the show are faced with the challenge of stacking each of their team’s decks with 8 vocalists that will go head-to-head this season – ultimately fighting to be crowned The Voice.

The concept of the show is genius – take the smoke and mirrors, autotuners, lipstick, high heels, age limit, and dress sizes out of the equation and all you are left with is the voiceRead the rest of this entry »

I think there must be something wrong with me, Linus.  Christmas is coming, but I’m not happy.  I don’t feel the way I’m supposed to feel.”  Charlie Brown stops on his way to ice skating and shares an introspective moment with his pal Linus.  Charles Schulz wrote an honest, perceptive, and wise-before-his-time character that makes Charlie Brown one of the most mature, notable cartoon characters of all time.  A Charlie Brown Christmas first aired in 1965 as a TV special on CBS.  It aired on this network from its conception until the year 2000 when ABC picked it up and has had it ever since. Naughty or Nice: Which List Are You On?

In Favorite Song, Hear this, Music, See this, You HAVE to on December 3, 2009 at 5:00 am

Most people grow up with a fear of being naughty.   This might stem from a strict religious upbringing, school experiences, or even more timely – the Christmas season.  Parents warn their children that bad behavior will warrant a lump of coal in their stocking and a spot on the naughty list.  The better behaved you are, the more presents you will get.  Now, we know this isn’t exactly the case.  But somewhere deep inside of us we steer clear of negative, selfish behavior during the Christmas season just in case it is true.
