Over 2000 miles away, Hollywood is the American Film capital.  Due to its fame and cultural identity as the historical center of movie studios and movie stars, the word “Hollywood” is often used as a metonymy  of American cinema.  Just as actors and actresses complete their mecca when they end up at movie studio gates, so to do songwriters flock to the streets of Nashville and attempt to fulfill their life’s purpose when writing music.  With these two cities being so far apart in purpose and location, what joins them?  Read the rest of this entry »

With the Oscars less than a week away, how can music lovers look forward to the awards?  Songs tell stories and most people who love a good song, enjoy a good movie.  More specifically though, there are a few categories that cater to the musical mind.  One of those is Best Original Song.  This year the odds are in favor for Randy Newman.

The 2010 Country Radio Seminar is off and running.  Last night, after a day of interviews, showcases, and industry discussions, the attendees of the seminar made their way to CRS After Hours at The Bridge.  After hours, The Bridge becomes more than a 4th floor glass structure connecting the hotel and public parking garage.  It is in this bar/lounge that industry veterans, hopefuls and wannabes stand on their musical clouds of wishful thinking and dream of what life would be life if we could all have a full time career in the music business that featured longevity, integrity, and some really good music; and yes – money! At night, the attendees of the seminar meet up at the Bridge Bar in the Renaissance Hotel downtown. The room is packed with seminar attendees with the nightly addition of local hopefuls that drop in to network. A word of caution – do not sign any contracts or shake any hands with someone that promises you the moon. A common downfall of this event is when unsigned artists attend the nightly mixers in hopes of being discovered and they get “wined and dined” by middle aged men in suits that tell them what they want to hear. 2010: Happy New Year

In Life Around Me, Ponder this, You HAVE to on January 1, 2010 at 1:02 pm

“Another fresh new year is here
Another year to live!
To banish worry, doubt, and fear,
To love and laugh and give!

This bright new year is given me
To live each day with zest
To daily grow and try to be
My highest and my best!

I have the opportunity
Once more to right some wrongs,
To pray for peace, to plant a tree,
And sing more joyful songs!”
